5 inch Samsung Galaxy Grand i9080 and dual SIM Grand i9082 announced
The Samsung Galaxy Grand i9082 that was first seen last week is now official, as Samsung has announced it alongside the Galaxy Grand i9080. The sole difference between the two is that the i9080 is a single SIM device, while the i9082 is a dual SIM one.
Although the Galaxy Grand comes with a large 5 inch display, its resolution is only WVGA (800 x 480), so we’re not talking about a high-end smartphone here. That aside, the i9080 and i9082 feature Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, HSPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, A-GPS with Glonass, 8MP rear camera with Flash and 1080p video recording, 2MP front-facing camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, and MicroSD card support (up to 64GB). The handsets are similar in size and weight (143.5 x 76.9 x 9.6 mm, 162 grams), and include 2100 mAh batteries.
Samsung says the Galaxy Grand i9082 will be the first among the two new handsets to hit the market – starting the first quarter of 2013. The Grand i9080 will be released shortly after that. There’s no word on the smartphones’ prices at the moment. In any case, neither of them should be too expensive. After all, if you want an expensive 5 inch Samsung handset, you can just buy a Galaxy Note.
Samsung Galaxy Grand Unveiled, Brings Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and 5-inch Display
Some of the rumors talking about a new Android-powered smartphone from Samsung have been confirmed today. Samsung just announced the Galaxy Grand model, a smartphone that aims at the mid-range segment of the market.
The South Korea-based company claims that the new Samsung Galaxy Grand is designed for the customers with “fast-paced mobile lifestyles who demand more from their phone.”
Samsung has chosen an interesting combination of features for the new Galaxy Grand, and, hopefully, the users will appreciate the final product.
Samsung Galaxy Grand (GT-I9080) comes with a 5-inch display with TFT LCD technology, which is supposed to provide vivid colors and quality, but at WVGA resolution (400 x 800 pixels).
Samsung claims that the big display is not affecting the smartphone’s ergonomics, Galaxy Grand being thin, therefore easy to control with one hand. Samsung Galaxy Grand measures 143,5 x 76,9 x 9,6 mm, while weighing in 162 grams, decent sizes for a mid-end smartphone.
The previous rumors about its processor were not confirmed (it was speculated that will pack the Exynos 4 Quad chipset of the Galaxy S3), as the South Korean company fitted a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. Still, Samsung claims that the hardware platform can easily support multitasking, while providing fast Internet browsing and superior graphics for apps and gaming.
Samsung Galaxy Grand will come pre-loaded with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and for the time being there are no details regarding an update to Android 4.2. Just like other Galaxy terminals with big displays, Galaxy Grand allows the user to simultaneously run two apps on the same screen, courtesy of the Multi Window feature.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand technical specifications also includes 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal flash storage, completed with microSD card (up to 64 GB supported), primary camera with 8 megapixel sensor, front-facing 2 megapixel camera, and 2,100 mAh battery.
The smartphone comes with accelerometer, brightness sensor, compass, proximity sensor and gyro, as well as A-GPS and Glonass, Bluetooth 4.0, and WiFi 802.11n.
Samsung Galaxy Grand will also have a dual-SIM variant (GT-I9082), but Samsung didn’t unveil the exact release date, nor the price.
Samsung unveils Galaxy Grand with 5.0-inch display, Android 4.1
Samsung has unveiled the Android 4.1.2 running Galaxy Grand with 5.0-inch WVGA display.
Samsung Galaxy Grand is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and it comes with 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage (expandable by another 64GB). Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz), Wi-Fi HT40, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.0 + LE, A-GPS, Glonass and DLNA. It comes with the usual set of sensors like accelerometer, light and proximity sensors, gyro sensor and a digital compass. The Samsung Galaxy Grand is powered by a 2100mAh battery.
Coming back to the display, as rumoured, the Galaxy Grand sports a WVGA 480×800 display in a bid to keep the costs down. While that is sure to bring the PPI of the screen down along with the costs, we would like to reserve our comment on the quality of the display until we see it in person.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand comes with a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera capable of making 720p video calls.
Galaxy Grand comes with Android 4.1.2 and includes various software features that have made an appearance on earlier Samsung devices including Direct Call (automatically dial a call by raising the device up to the ear), Popup Video (lets users watch video in a pop-up window anywhere on the screen while running other tasks) and the virtual assistant S Voice.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand will be available in both single-SIM (GT-I9080) and dual-SIM (GT-I9082) variants. The dual-SIM variant is dual-active, which means it is possible to receive calls on one SIM number while talking on the other.
There’s no word from Samsung yet on the pricing or availability of the phone.
